First, thanks for the article. I found it very thorough and well written. Why anyone is complaining about a solid overview is beyond me. Anyway, I have been working on this same problem recently and hit a snag that was not addressed.

I have a new machine with SATA only. I have a removable rack in the front of the machine to make this easy. Both of them would lock up the system at boot time if there was no drive installed in the rack.

Anybody have any ideas? Since this is supposed to be copmletely transparent it should work on any system. Your disk maker will have details specific to that model for the jumper settings, they should be set to master. Untill the correct jumper settings are set, do not attempt to do anything else. If you need to retrieve data, you will lose everything on the drive if you attempt 'initialise' in Disk Management.

The only thing you can do in Disk Management, once the jumpers are set correctly, is to assign a drive letter if one isnt assigned. Was this reply helpful? What if you only connect one IDE drive in at a time? Maybe the powersupply is not up to running so many drives or the jumpers are not being set right.
